Families ask me the same question every season: can we really show our children the pyramids and still give them a proper beach holiday in five days? After three decades of guiding families from Sofia, Plovdiv, Warsaw, Berlin and Milan, my answer is always the same — yes, if the itinerary is honest about pace. This is the itinerary I have refined for exactly that audience: two unhurried days in Cairo where children meet the pharaohs at their own speed, then a domestic flight to the Red Sea where the rest of the week belongs to warm water, soft sand and dinner under the stars.

We deliberately keep the Cairo half short and well-paced. No 5 AM starts. No rushing between sites. Your guide knows which corner of the Grand Egyptian Museum keeps a seven-year-old completely still for forty minutes, which camel handler at the pyramids is gentle and patient with nervous children, and which Nile-side restaurant has a play area that lets parents finish their coffee. Hurghada then does what only the Red Sea can do — water so clear children can count the fish without a snorkel, beaches with shaded family pools, and reefs that begin twenty metres from the shore.

Day 1

Arrival in Cairo · Welcome to Egypt

Your family is met at Cairo International Airport by an EGT Luxury Travel representative holding a name board. We handle the visa-on-arrival if you choose that option, escort you through immigration, and take you to a spacious private vehicle suitable for your family size — separate child seats included on request.

Afternoon

Check-in at your 5★ Cairo hotel. The rest of the afternoon is yours: most families use it for the pool and an early dinner. Your guide will visit you in the lobby for a relaxed briefing about the next two days, ten minutes only, no pressure.

Evening

Optional welcome dinner at a Nile-side restaurant with a family-friendly menu. Children love the floating restaurants on the river — slow river views, mezze platters, and Egyptian sweet pastries for dessert.

Day 2

Pyramids of Giza · Sphinx · Grand Egyptian Museum

The day the children will talk about for years. Your guide collects you after breakfast — not at 6 AM. We aim for a 9 AM arrival at the plateau, which works much better for families.

Morning

Approach the Great Pyramid first. Children are usually silent for the first few minutes — the size is unlike anything they have ever stood beside. Your guide explains how the pyramid was built in clear, child-friendly language: not slaves, but skilled paid workers who lived in a planned village whose remains we can show you. Time for a gentle short camel ride along the desert edge if the children would like one — the handler we use is patient with nervous riders.

Afternoon

Family-friendly lunch at a restaurant overlooking the plateau, then the Grand Egyptian Museum. Your guide takes a special 90-minute route designed for younger visitors: the boy king Tutankhamun's golden mask, his chariots, his ostrich-feather fan, the model boats from royal tombs. Children stay engaged because the route is built around the objects they already half-recognise from school books.

Evening

Return to the hotel. Family swim time. Optional Sound and Light show at the pyramids — older children love it; younger children may prefer an early bedtime.

Fly to Hurghada · Red Sea check-in

Late-morning private transfer to Cairo airport for the one-hour domestic flight to Hurghada. We handle every step at the airport — luggage, check-in, security — so the family experience is calm.

Afternoon

On arrival, another EGT Luxury Travel representative meets you and drives you to your beachfront resort. Check-in, settle into your family rooms, and the afternoon belongs to the Red Sea. Many families do nothing else on this first afternoon: the contrast between Cairo and Hurghada is sharp and welcome.

Evening

All-inclusive dinner at the resort. Walk along the beach as the lights come on — the Red Sea is famously calm at sunset.

Children sometimes underestimate how strong the Red Sea sun is. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, even when staying in the shade. The water itself reflects heavily.

Family time at the resort — pools, beach, kids' club, water slides depending on your hotel choice. Younger children love the splash zones; older children spend the entire morning in the sea.

Afternoon

Optional Sindbad Submarine reef tour (1.5 hours total): a real submarine that descends 22 metres below the Red Sea surface for an hour of fish and coral observation through large panoramic windows. The only operating tourist submarine in Egypt and the activity children ask to repeat. No swimming or snorkelling required — perfect for grandparents and very young children.

Evening

Beach barbecue or themed dinner at the resort. Most family resorts in Hurghada run an evening kids' programme until 9 PM.

A final morning at the resort. Most flights to Europe leave Hurghada in the afternoon or evening, which gives families a full last beach morning.

Attractions you will visit

The Great Pyramid of Khufu — through a child's eyes

Built around 2560 BC for the pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still standing. Two and a half million stone blocks, 146 metres tall at the time of construction, the tallest building on earth for 3,800 years. To children, the facts are almost irrelevant. What matters is the moment of approach — the moment when the pyramid stops being a photograph in a textbook and becomes a mountain of stone they can put their small hands on. We always pause at the base for a minute of silence. It is the best teaching moment in Egyptian travel: no words required.

Photography

Stand the children at the base of one of the largest stones for scale photographs. The light is best between 9 and 11 AM.

Recommended visit time

Allow 2 hours including the Sphinx and panoramic viewpoint.

The Great Sphinx of Giza

Seventy-three metres long, twenty metres tall, carved from a single limestone outcrop. Children always ask the same question: what happened to the nose? The honest answer — we do not know exactly — is part of why the Sphinx remains so endlessly interesting to younger visitors. Most Egyptologists associate it with the pharaoh Khafre, who built the second pyramid. It is one of the very few ancient monuments in the world whose face has watched empires rise and fall for forty-five centuries without ever being buried completely out of sight.

The Grand Egyptian Museum — family route

The largest archaeological museum on earth dedicated to a single civilisation, opened in stages and now displaying the full 5,000-piece treasure of Tutankhamun together for the first time in history. For families, the GEM has two extraordinary advantages over the old museum on Tahrir Square: it is brightly lit, air-conditioned, and walkable, and the galleries are designed with younger visitors in mind. Your guide concentrates on the objects that genuinely interest children — the gold mask, the chariots, the small everyday items from royal tombs, the painted wooden toys that look surprisingly modern. Forty minutes of focused attention here is worth four hours of wandering.

Recommended visit time

90 minutes is the sweet spot for families with children under 12.

The Red Sea reef of Hurghada

Hurghada sits on one of the richest coral reef systems on the planet. The Red Sea is unusually warm — between 22 and 28 degrees year-round — and almost completely calm in the bays. Visibility regularly exceeds twenty metres. The coral reef begins within a few metres of most family resort beaches, which means even non-swimmers see brightly coloured fish in shallow water. This is the easiest place in the world to introduce a child to the underwater world. No diving required, no qualifications, no equipment beyond a mask and snorkel.

Photography

Bring a waterproof phone case or a small underwater camera. The shallow reef colours photograph beautifully in midday light.

Sindbad Submarine

The only operating tourist submarine in Egypt. A real 44-passenger submarine that descends 22 metres below the Red Sea surface for an hour of reef observation through panoramic windows. Two divers swim alongside the submarine, feeding the fish to attract them close to the windows — a thoughtful piece of theatre that delights children completely. The whole tour, including transfer from your resort, takes about three hours. We rank it as the single most successful family activity in Egypt for one simple reason: every family member, from a grandparent who cannot swim to a four-year-old who has never seen a fish, sees the reef equally.

Best time to visit

This itinerary works year-round, which is the main reason families choose it. The Red Sea is warm twelve months a year, the Cairo half is short enough that even summer afternoons are manageable, and the resorts are designed around shaded family pools. October to April offers the most comfortable Cairo temperatures (18–28 °C) and the warmest sun-lounging weather in Hurghada. May to September is hotter — over 35 °C in Cairo, but the Cairo half is only two days and the rest of the holiday is spent on or in the water. Christmas, Easter and the European school holidays are our busiest weeks; book at least three months ahead for those periods.

Visa

Most European nationalities (including Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain) receive a 30-day tourist visa on arrival for 25 USD cash. Bulgarian nationals can also apply for an e-visa online before departure — faster on arrival and useful with children.

Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from date of entry. Children require their own passport.

Currency

Egyptian pound (EGP). Euros and US dollars are widely accepted in Hurghada hotels and shops. Bring small denominations for tips.

What to pack for children

Sun hats, high-factor sunscreen, light long sleeves for evening, swim shoes for the reef (small sharp coral pieces), refillable water bottles, and one warmer layer for the Cairo evenings November to March.

Health

No mandatory vaccinations. Drink bottled or filtered water only. Hand sanitiser is useful for children. Most family resorts have a 24/7 in-house doctor.

Tipping

Tipping in Egypt is a normal part of daily life. As a guideline, 5–10 EUR per day for the guide and 3–5 EUR per day for the driver, paid at the end of the Cairo portion. In all-inclusive resorts, small tips for restaurant staff and pool attendants are appreciated.
