Why choose this tour

Cairo rewards short visits more generously than almost any capital I know. Two full days and three nights are enough to stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid, spend a meaningful afternoon inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, walk the medieval lanes of Khan El Khalili at dusk, and watch the Nile change colour from a rooftop terrace. This itinerary is built for the traveller who has a long weekend, a stopover between Europe and the Gulf, or a serious curiosity about Egypt but only a few days to act on it.

I designed this tour for one specific guest in mind — the cultural traveller who has imagined the pyramids for years and finally has a window to see them, but who refuses to do it badly. Every minute counts. So every transfer is private, every guide is a senior Egyptologist, every entry is timed to avoid crowds, and every evening is calm enough that you actually feel rested. Day 1

Arrival in Cairo

Met at Cairo International Airport by an EGT Luxury Travel representative holding a name board. Visa-on-arrival handled if you choose that option, then escort to your private vehicle for the transfer into the city.

Afternoon

Check-in at your 5★ hotel — Marriott Mena House under the pyramids if you want to wake up to the view, or a central Nile-side hotel if you prefer to be in the heart of Cairo. The rest of the afternoon is yours to rest or take a short orientation walk.

Evening

Optional welcome dinner at a Nile-side restaurant or a rooftop terrace with pyramid views. Your guide visits you in the lobby for a short briefing about tomorrow.

Pyramids of Giza · Sphinx · Grand Egyptian Museum

The day you came to Cairo for. Your senior Egyptologist meets you in the lobby at a sensible hour — early enough to beat the coaches, civilised enough to enjoy breakfast first.

Morning

The Giza plateau. We approach the Great Pyramid first. Your guide walks you through how the pyramid was actually built — the workers' village, the construction ramps, the engineering. Inside, you have the option of climbing the Grand Gallery to the King's Chamber if you wish. Time for the Sphinx and the panoramic viewpoint where all nine pyramids line up. An optional short camel ride if you would like one.

Afternoon

Lunch at a local Egyptian restaurant overlooking the plateau. Then the Grand Egyptian Museum. Your guide takes you straight to the highlights: the Tutankhamun galleries (the complete 5,000-piece treasure displayed together for the first time), the Grand Staircase lined with monumental statues, and the panoramic window framing the pyramids themselves. Two and a half to three hours inside.

Evening

Return to the hotel. Optional Sound and Light show at the pyramids in the evening — recommended on a first visit.

Old Islamic Cairo · Khan El Khalili · Departure

A relaxed morning, then the second face of Cairo — medieval, layered, completely different from yesterday's ancient world.

Morning

Late breakfast and check-out. Your guide collects you for a walk through Old Islamic Cairo: the Citadel of Saladin (with the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the panoramic view across the city), Al-Muizz Street (the longest open-air Islamic museum in the world), and the Mamluk-era mosques and madrasas.

Afternoon

Lunch at a traditional Egyptian restaurant inside the old quarter. Then Khan El Khalili — the great medieval bazaar, founded in 1382 by the Mamluk sultan al-Zahir Barquq. Spices, perfumes, lanterns, copper, papyrus, alabaster. Your guide knows which shops are honest and which to avoid.

Evening

Optional tea at El Fishawy — Cairo's oldest café, open every night for over two centuries. Then a private transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure.

Attractions you will visit

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

Built around 2560 BC for the pharaoh Khufu, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still standing. Originally 146 metres tall, the tallest building on earth for 3,800 years. 2.5 million stone blocks, each averaging 2.5 tons, fitted with precision so fine you cannot slide a knife between them. Recent scanning has identified hidden voids inside the structure that we still cannot enter. Inside, the Grand Gallery climbs at a precise 26° to the King's Chamber, where the empty granite sarcophagus is too wide to have passed through the entrance — meaning the chamber was built around it.

Photography

Panoramic viewpoint south-west of the pyramids — all three of the major pyramids align in a single frame. Best in early morning or late afternoon light.

Recommended visit time

2 hours including Sphinx and viewpoint.

The Great Sphinx of Giza

73 metres long, 20 metres tall, carved from a single limestone outcrop. Most Egyptologists associate it with the pharaoh Khafre, builder of the second pyramid, around 2500 BC. Its missing nose has been the subject of more legends than almost any other monument in Egypt — Napoleon, Mamluk Sufis, time itself. The truth is we do not know exactly when or why it was lost. For most of its history the body lay buried up to the neck in sand; what you see today is the result of careful restoration.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

Two kilometres from the pyramids, the largest archaeological museum on earth dedicated to a single civilisation. The atrium opens with the eleven-metre, eighty-three-ton colossus of Ramses II. The Grand Staircase climbs past dozens of monumental statues to a panoramic window framing the pyramids themselves. The Tutankhamun galleries — open in their full form for the first time in history — display the complete 5,000-piece treasure recovered by Howard Carter in 1922, including the iconic gold mask. The upper floor is where the museum slowly turns from monumental to intimate: chariots, papyri, painted wooden toys, the everyday objects of New Kingdom life.

The Citadel of Saladin

Built by Saladin in 1176 on a rocky outcrop above the city as a defence against the Crusaders, the Citadel was the seat of Egyptian government for almost 700 years. The Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali — Ottoman in style, finished in 1848 — dominates the skyline. From the southern terrace, the panoramic view stretches across medieval Cairo to the Pyramids of Giza on the horizon. On a clear winter morning, the line of nine pyramids is visible from here, framed between minarets.

Khan El Khalili Bazaar

Founded in 1382 by the Mamluk sultan al-Zahir Barquq, Khan El Khalili has been the commercial heart of Cairo for almost 650 years. The covered alleys are arranged by trade: spice merchants in one lane, copper and silver in another, perfumes, lanterns, alabaster, papyrus. Most travellers come for the souvenirs; most return for the atmosphere. El Fishawy, the bazaar's oldest café, has been open every night since 1797 — a small marble-topped table, a glass of mint tea, and the conversation of the entire quarter passing within arm's reach.

Photography

Visit in the late afternoon for the best light through the alleys. The bazaar is most photogenic between 5 and 7 PM.

Best time to visit

October to April is the ideal Cairo window — daytime temperatures between 20 and 28 °C, cool evenings, and the famous winter Cairo light that photographs the pyramids in pale gold. May to September is hotter (35–40 °C) but the sightseeing is morning-only and the hotel pools are open until late. Christmas, Easter and the European school holidays are the busiest weeks. Friday morning has noticeably less traffic in Cairo, which makes airport transfers smoother.

30-day tourist visa on arrival for 25 USD cash, or apply for the Egypt e-visa online before departure. Bulgarian and most EU nationalities are eligible for both options.
