Things to do in Cairo

Greater Cairo covers several very different sightseeing areas, and the mistake most first-time visitors make is treating them as one. The Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum sit on the west side; the older necropolises of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur lie further south; medieval Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Khan El Khalili are in the historic core on the east bank.

Traffic, not distance, decides what fits in a day. A realistic plan pairs sites that share the same side of the city, which is how our private day tours are built.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

The Giza plateau holds the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple, all within one walled site a short drive from central Cairo. Most visitors spend two to three hours there with a guide, including the panoramic viewpoint used for photographs.

Early departures are the most comfortable choice for heat and crowds; a sunrise visit is the quietest of all. If your time in Cairo is very short, the plateau alone still works as a half-day.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands next to the Giza plateau and is now the natural companion to a pyramids morning, which is why the two are so often booked as a single day. Its collection includes the Tutankhamun material, and the building itself — the grand staircase and the pyramid-facing windows — is part of the experience.

The older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square still holds an enormous collection and remains worth a separate visit for anyone with more than two days in the city.

Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur

Saqqara is the burial ground of the Old Kingdom capital and home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt's earliest large stone monument. Nearby Memphis, the capital itself, is now an open-air museum best known for the colossus of Ramesses II, while Dahshur holds Sneferu's Bent and Red Pyramids.

These three sit close together south of Giza and are usually visited on one day. They are markedly quieter than Giza, and they show the pyramid as an evolving idea rather than a finished monument — which is exactly why many returning visitors rate the day highly.

Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and the Citadel

Islamic Cairo is the medieval city: mosques, madrasas and merchant houses along Al-Muizz Street, with the Citadel of Salah El Din and its Alabaster Mosque above it and Khan El Khalili bazaar at its heart. It is a walking day, and it rewards a guide who can read the buildings.

Coptic Cairo, a short distance south, is a compact quarter of early Christian churches and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. It is quieter, shaded and easy underfoot, and it pairs naturally with the Citadel or with Khan El Khalili in a single day.

How many days do you need in Cairo?

Two full days cover the essentials without rushing: Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum on one, historic Cairo on the other. Three days add Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur, or a slower pace with the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir.

One day is possible — including as an airport layover — but it means choosing the plateau over everything else.

Day trips and onward travel from Cairo

Cairo works well as a base. Alexandria is a full day on the Mediterranean coast, and Luxor and Aswan are reachable as long day trips by flight, or more comfortably as overnight extensions.

Travellers based on the Red Sea often do the reverse and come to Cairo for the day from Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, by flight or by road.

Cairo with a Nile cruise

The classic Egypt itinerary is two or three nights in Cairo followed by a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, joined by a short domestic flight. Cairo delivers the pyramids and the museums; the cruise delivers the temples, with travel happening while you sleep.

Cairo for families and private guiding

Cairo suits families better than its reputation suggests, provided the days are short and air-conditioned. Children respond strongly to the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and a Nile dinner cruise; long walking days in the medieval city are the part to shorten.
