The Grand Egyptian Museum is now the anchor of any Cairo trip
The full Tutankhamun collection, the grand staircase and the reconstructed Khufu boat are all visitable. Cairo itineraries have quietly changed — most of us now put GEM at position two, right after the Pyramids, and drop the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir to an optional day two. Ticketing is smooth, wheelchair access is excellent, and the mezzanine café has the best pyramid view in the country.
The Sphinx International Airport is handling more charters
West Cairo's Sphinx airport (SPX) is now taking regular charter and low-cost traffic, particularly from Central and Eastern Europe. If your ticket says SPX, you are landing 15 minutes from the Pyramids — enormously more convenient than the main CAI airport for a Giza-focused first day. Pack accordingly and arrange transfer in advance.
e-Visa is now the fastest way in
The Egyptian e-Visa system covers most European, North American and Gulf nationalities. Apply on the official government portal 5–7 days before travel, print the PDF, and clear immigration in under 15 minutes at Cairo, Hurghada or Sharm airports. Visa-on-arrival is still available at $25 cash but the queues are longer. Do not use the impostor 'visa' websites that show up in Google ads — many overcharge or fail to deliver.
The new Cairo–Aswan railway upgrade
Sleeper trains between Cairo and Luxor/Aswan have been refurbished and the newer generation is genuinely comfortable — private twin cabin with hot dinner and breakfast for about €90–110 per person one way. A perfectly reasonable alternative to a domestic flight if you enjoy overnight rail travel.
Site restorations that affect your visit
The Avenue of Sphinxes in Luxor is fully walkable and open at night — do the Karnak-to-Luxor Temple walk after sunset if you can. The tomb of Amenhotep I opened to visitors in a rotation with the Tutankhamun tomb. Abu Simbel had its lighting upgraded and the sun-alignment ceremonies on 22 February and 22 October now handle larger crowds efficiently.
New and expanded flight routes
Direct routes from more European cities to Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm have expanded in the last twelve months. EgyptAir has restored direct flights on several long-haul routes and code-shares extensively with Star Alliance partners. For Nile cruise travellers, Aswan is now easier to fly into directly from a handful of European cities in high season.
What has NOT changed
Egypt is still safe in every area a tourist visits. Prices remain excellent value against the Euro. The people are still, in my very biased opinion, the warmest hosts on earth. And the sunrise over the pyramids has not been photographed as many times as it deserves.
What's new vs what hasn't changed
| Area | What's new | What hasn't changed |
|---|---|---|
| Museums | GEM full opening | Egyptian Museum Tahrir still open |
| Visas | e-Visa now standard | $25 visa-on-arrival still available |
| Airports | Sphinx SPX handling more charters | Cairo CAI, HRG, SSH normal |
| Trains | Refurbished sleepers Cairo–Luxor–Aswan | 9-hour journey time |
| Sites | Amenhotep I tomb open in rotation | Pyramids, Karnak, Abu Simbel — normal |
Expert Tip
If your ticket says SPX (Sphinx airport), not CAI, treat it as a gift — you land 15 minutes from the Pyramids instead of an hour across Cairo. Arrange your first-night hotel in Giza rather than downtown and you save half a day.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to apply for a visa before I arrive in Egypt?
For most European, US, UK and Gulf passports you can either buy a $25 visa on arrival or apply for the e-Visa online. The e-Visa is faster on arrival.
Is the Sphinx airport worth using instead of Cairo main?
If you are going straight to Giza or the Grand Egyptian Museum, absolutely — 15 minutes vs 45+ minutes.
Has the price of Egypt tourism gone up in 2026?
Site tickets have increased modestly. Hotels remain very good value against the Euro. Restaurants and transport are still among the cheapest in the Mediterranean.
Are Nile cruises operating normally?
Yes — 3, 4 and 7-night cruises between Luxor and Aswan run daily. High season is October–April.
Is Ramadan a bad time to visit Egypt?
Not at all. Sites are open, restaurants serve tourists all day in tourist areas, and the evening atmosphere is magical. Alcohol availability outside hotels is reduced during Ramadan.
Are there new Nile cruise ships in 2026?
Yes — two new 5-star cruisers launched between Luxor and Aswan this year, and the Dahabiya sailing fleet has grown. Prices from about €690 for a 3-night classic and €1,400+ for a 4-night Dahabiya.
