Orange Bay — the boat trip I book first for every guest arriving in Hurghada.
Hurghada is where I send my guests when they want the Red Sea done properly. If today is your day here, do sea in the morning, desert in the afternoon and old town at night — that's the trio that turns a beach holiday into an actual trip.
Quick answer
One day in Hurghada, done properly:
- ✓ Morning — Orange Bay or Giftun Island boat trip
- ✓ Afternoon — Desert quad safari OR Sahl Hasheesh beach
- ✓ Evening — Grilled seafood on Sheraton Road
- ✓ Nightcap — Marina Boulevard walk
Sea in the morning, desert in the afternoon, old town at night — the trio that works.

Morning — Orange Bay or Giftun Island
The best-value morning is a fast boat to Orange Bay, a stretch of white sand and shallow turquoise water off the reef. Two snorkel stops on protected reefs, lunch on board, and the sandbar itself for beach time. Departures around 08:30 from Hurghada marina, back by 16:30. Book a private or semi-private boat if you can — the mega-catamarans are cheaper but crowded. Expect to pay €35–50 per person on a shared boat, €150–200 for a small private one for two.
Afternoon — desert quad or Sahl Hasheesh beach
If you have energy after the sea, an afternoon desert safari (quad bike, camel ride, Bedouin tea, sunset) is the classic — pickup 15:00, back to the hotel by 20:00. If you'd rather stay in beach mode, taxi to Sahl Hasheesh boardwalk for a lazy few hours: cleaner beach, calmer sea, better restaurants than central Hurghada. Both options work; do one, not both.
Evening — Old Sheraton Road for dinner
Skip the hotel buffet tonight. Head to El Dahar (Old Town) or Sheraton Road for grilled seafood at Shaty El Nagoum or koshari at Abou Tarek's Hurghada branch. Fresh fish, sold by weight, grilled in front of you, with baladi bread and tahina — €15–25 per person with fresh juice. This is the Hurghada that existed before the resorts and it's still the best part of town after sunset.
The nightcap — Marina Boulevard or a rooftop
Walk the Hurghada Marina promenade after dinner. Lights, live music, families, dive shops, decent gelato. If you want a proper cocktail, the rooftop bars at the Steigenberger Al Dau or the Kempinski Soma Bay are the best in town. Skip the pushy bar touts at the marina entrance — walk past politely.
For divers — a shorter version
If you're a certified diver, replace the morning boat with a two-tank dive at Small Giftun or Abu Ramada. Departures 07:30, back by 15:00, then an easy afternoon and dinner as above. My favourite operators are the small owner-run centres in Sekalla and Sahl Hasheesh — send us a message and we'll match you with one that fits your level.
Family variation
For families with kids under 10: swap the desert safari for the dolphin house half-day trip (calmer sea, guaranteed swimming spot) and eat at El Halaka in Sakkala for family-friendly grilled fish. Skip the marina bars and add ice-cream at Cinnabon on the boardwalk. Everyone happy, everyone in bed by 22:00.
What I'd skip today
The 'aquarium' street attractions on the main road — small enclosures, tired animals, not worth your time or money. The dolphin-swimming captive facilities — real dolphins in the wild are ten minutes away by boat. The 'international bazaar' in central Sekalla — same souvenirs as Khan El Khalili at triple the price. And any tout on the corniche offering 'special tours' — go through your hotel or a licensed operator.
Hurghada activities compared
| Activity | Time | Budget | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orange Bay boat | 8h | €35–50 shared | First-timers, families |
| Private boat charter | 8h | €150–200 for two | Couples, small groups |
| Two-tank dive | 7h | €60–90 | Certified divers |
| Desert quad safari | 5h | €30–45 | Adventure lovers |
| Sahl Hasheesh beach | Half day | €10–20 taxi + drinks | Relaxers |
Expert Tip
If I had only one day in Hurghada, I'd always book Orange Bay first — the sandbar, the reef stops, the lunch on deck. Everything else comes second. Book a small semi-private boat, not a mega-catamaran; the difference in experience is bigger than the price gap.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hurghada worth visiting for one day?
Yes if you can do at least one boat trip. Hurghada without the sea is missing the point — it's the Red Sea that makes this town.
How much is a snorkel trip in Hurghada?
€30–50 per person on a shared boat with lunch, €150+ for a small private boat for two. Prices at the marina are usually €5–10 cheaper than booking through the hotel.
Can I visit Luxor from Hurghada in a day?
Yes, as a long day trip — leave 04:00, back at 22:00. It's worth it, but a two-day Luxor with an overnight is much less exhausting.
Is Hurghada beach nice or should I go to Sahl Hasheesh?
Sahl Hasheesh has a much nicer beach and boardwalk. Central Hurghada is where the food and nightlife are. Do both across your stay if possible.
Is Uber available in Hurghada?
Uber and Careem both operate in Hurghada. Reliable, cheap, and much safer than negotiating with street taxis.
Can I do a Nile cruise from Hurghada?
Yes — several operators offer 3 or 4-night Nile cruises with private transfers from Hurghada to Luxor or Aswan. It's the best way to combine Red Sea and Nile in one trip.
