Day 2

Pyramids, Sphinx & the Grand Egyptian Museum

Early breakfast, then your private senior Egyptologist takes you straight onto the Giza plateau before the day-tour crowds arrive from Sharm and Hurghada.

Morning

The Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple. Optional camel ride along the western desert edge.

Afternoon

Lunch at a fine local restaurant overlooking the plateau (we like Khufu's, where the menu was designed by chef Mohamed Roshdy and the view is unmatched). Then the Grand Egyptian Museum — a slow, three-hour guided walk through the Tutankhamun galleries and the Grand Staircase.

Evening

Free evening. Optional Sound and Light show at the Pyramids — a cliché that, on a clear winter evening, is genuinely beautiful.

Day 3

Coptic and Islamic Cairo · Khan El Khalili dinner

A slower-paced cultural day in the heart of old Cairo. Most luxury travellers tell us this turns out to be one of their favourite days of the trip.

Morning

Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (built over the cave where the Holy Family is said to have sheltered), and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The narrow alleys here have been continuously inhabited for two thousand years.

Afternoon

Islamic Cairo: the Citadel of Saladin and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with one of the great panoramic views over the city. The Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques opposite each other are some of the finest medieval architecture in the Islamic world.

Evening

Khan El Khalili. Walk the medieval souk with your guide, finish with mint tea at El Fishawy (open continuously since 1797), and dinner at Naguib Mahfouz Café — named for the Nobel laureate who used to write here.

Day 4

Fly to Luxor · Karnak & Luxor Temple · Embark deluxe cruiser

Mid-morning EgyptAir flight to Luxor. Your Luxor Egyptologist meets you at the airport and drives you to the dock to embark on your deluxe cruiser.

Afternoon

Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built. We walk the Hypostyle Hall, the obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose, the Sacred Lake, and the recently restored avenue of sphinxes.

Evening

Late afternoon visit to Luxor Temple as the sun softens. Welcome cocktail and dinner on board.

Valley of the Kings · Hatshepsut · Sail to Edfu

Early start to the West Bank before the heat and the crowds.

Morning

Three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings (your senior guide picks the best three open that day; optional Tutankhamun, Ramses VI and Seti I tickets available extra). Hatshepsut's three-terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari. Colossi of Memnon photo stop.

Afternoon

Back on board for lunch as the cruiser sails south through some of the most beautiful countryside in Egypt. Afternoon tea on the sun deck.

Day 6

Edfu by carriage · Kom Ombo · Sail to Aswan

Two of the loveliest Ptolemaic temples in Egypt, separated by a slow afternoon on the river — the day every traveller seems to photograph the most.

Morning

Horse-drawn carriage from the dock to Edfu Temple, the most completely preserved temple in the country, dedicated to the falcon god Horus.

Afternoon

Sail past the lock of Esna. Kom Ombo in the late afternoon — the only Egyptian temple dedicated equally to two gods, Sobek and Horus the Elder. The Crocodile Museum next door is worth the fifteen minutes.

Evening

Sailing into Aswan at sunset. Your captain will line up the cruiser through the narrow stretch where the river turns copper around the granite islands.

Abu Simbel · Philae · High Dam · Felucca

We give you the choice this morning: classic 4 AM private vehicle convoy drive to Abu Simbel (3 hours each way, arrives at sunrise), or 7 AM private charter flight (30 minutes each way, back in Aswan by lunchtime). Both with your senior Egyptologist.

Morning

Abu Simbel — the two cliff-cut temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser by the largest archaeological operation UNESCO has ever attempted.

Afternoon

Philae Temple of Isis on Agilkia Island, reached by motorboat. The Aswan High Dam. Late afternoon felucca around Elephantine Island and Lord Kitchener's Botanical Garden.

Evening

Optional dinner in a Nubian home in Gharb Soheil — indigo skies, painted walls, percussion and home cooking.

Slow breakfast on board, disembark mid-morning, short flight from Aswan to Hurghada (a single connection via Cairo, or — when scheduled — a direct).

Private transfer to your 5★ Red Sea resort. Check in, lunch, swim, sleep. The temples are behind you; the sea is ahead.

Optional: full-day snorkeling and dolphin trip to Mahmya Island or Orange Bay aboard a private boat. We organise this only with operators we trust completely.

Afternoon

Spa, beach, pool, à la carte lunch.

Evening

Optional sunset sail on a private yacht, or dinner at one of the resort's specialty restaurants.

Even non-swimmers should consider a half-hour try-dive in the shallow house reef. The corals at Hurghada have been protected for years and are some of the most accessible reefs in the world.

Attractions you will visit

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, built around 2560 BC and the tallest structure on earth for 3,800 years. Two and a half million blocks fitted with millimetre precision. Inside, the Grand Gallery rises at twenty-six degrees to the King's Chamber, where the empty granite sarcophagus is too wide to have passed through the entrance — it was set in place before the pyramid was built around it.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The largest archaeological museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation. The atrium begins with the eleven-metre, eighty-three-ton colossus of Ramses II. The Tutankhamun galleries display, for the first time in history, the full 5,000-piece treasure together. Allow three hours at minimum; a luxury private visit can extend to a full half-day with an expert.

Coptic Cairo

One of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian quarters in the world. The Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) was built in the seventh century above the southern gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus marks the spot where, according to tradition, the Holy Family rested during their flight to Egypt. The Ben Ezra Synagogue, restored in the nineteenth century, is built over the well where Moses is said to have been found.

The Citadel and Mosque of Muhammad Ali

Built by Saladin in the twelfth century to defend Cairo from Crusader attack, the Citadel has been the seat of Egyptian power for almost seven hundred years. The Mosque of Muhammad Ali, completed in 1857, is the most visible silhouette on the Cairo skyline — Ottoman in style, alabaster on the outside, dim and cool inside.

Karnak Temple

The work of thirty pharaohs over almost two thousand years. The Hypostyle Hall, five thousand square metres of carved stone roof supported by 134 columns, the central twelve standing twenty-one metres tall. Karnak rewards a guide who knows which side chapels to walk you into — there is a difference between visiting Karnak and merely passing through it.

Luxor Temple

Built primarily by Amenhotep III, expanded by Ramses II. Continuously sacred ground for thirty-four centuries — a thirteenth-century mosque still sits on top of the ancient walls of the first courtyard. The temple is best visited in the late afternoon; the colonnade of Amenhotep III is one of the most elegant spaces in Egyptian architecture.

Valley of the Kings

The hidden burial valley of the New Kingdom pharaohs, used for around five hundred years. Sixty-four tombs discovered. The tomb of Ramses VI (KV9) has an extraordinary astronomical ceiling. Seti I's tomb, open intermittently with an extra ticket, is the artistic high point of Egyptian funerary painting.

Hatshepsut's Temple at Deir el-Bahari

Three colonnaded terraces of pale limestone built into the cliffs. Hatshepsut, the woman who became pharaoh in her own right, used this temple to record her divine birth and her famous trading expedition to the Land of Punt. Her stepson Thutmose III attempted to erase her image from the walls after her death; the chisel marks are still visible.

Edfu Temple

The most completely preserved temple in Egypt. Built between 237 and 57 BC for Horus the falcon god. Walls forty metres high, roof still in place over the hypostyle hall, inscriptions detailing the daily rituals of the priests.

Kom Ombo Temple

The only Egyptian temple dedicated equally to two gods — Sobek and Horus the Elder. Everything is doubled, including the sanctuaries. On a back wall, one of the earliest known depictions of surgical instruments.

Abu Simbel — Ramses II and Nefertari

Ramses II carved both temples directly into the Nubian sandstone cliff in the thirteenth century BC. The Great Temple's four seated colossi are twenty metres tall and face the rising sun. Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, the morning light penetrates sixty metres into the temple to illuminate the inner sanctuary. The smaller temple, dedicated to Nefertari, is one of only two temples in Egypt where a queen is depicted at the same scale as her king.

Philae Temple of Isis

Built by the Ptolemies and Romans, the last functioning ancient Egyptian temple, closed only in 537 AD. Rescued in the 1970s and reassembled on the higher island of Agilkia. The approach by motorboat at sunset is one of the loveliest in Egypt.

Best time to visit

For this itinerary, October through April is the sweet spot — Cairo and Luxor are between 18 and 28°C, the cruise is at its most pleasant, and the Red Sea is still warm. December and January around the European holidays are the most photogenic weeks of the year, but also the most expensive and busiest; book at least three months in advance.

May through September brings high heat to Upper Egypt — the temples are still doable in the early morning, and prices on the deluxe cruisers drop significantly. The Red Sea is hottest in July and August but the water cools beautifully overnight.

If you can choose, late November and mid-January are the perfect weeks: clear light, dry air, manageable crowds. We can also build this itinerary around the solar alignment dates at Abu Simbel (22 February and 22 October) for travellers who want to witness the sun-shaft phenomenon in the inner sanctuary.
