Overview

Private Egyptologist, hotel pick-up and skip-the-line entry to the Giza plateau, the Sphinx, Saqqara step pyramid and the ancient capital of Memphis.

Cairo is the gateway to ancient Egypt — a sprawling, electric capital where the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World stands at the edge of one of the largest cities on Earth. Within a single skyline you'll find the Pyramids of Giza, twelfth-century mosques, Coptic churches older than Europe and a brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum housing over 100,000 artefacts.

On this experience your private Egyptologist brings the city to life with first-hand stories, hieroglyphic readings and the kind of context no guidebook can offer. You'll skip the queues, travel in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and spend your time learning, photographing and absorbing — not waiting in line.

Expect the sights, smells and sounds of a working megacity: call-to-prayer drifting over the Nile at sunset, the clatter of coppersmiths in Khan El Khalili, fresh bread on every corner. Cairo rewards curious travellers, and a good guide is the difference between checking off monuments and truly understanding them.

Attractions you'll visit

A closer look at the highlights of this experience — what to see, why it matters and how long to expect at each stop.

The Great Pyramids of Giza

Built around 2,560 BC for pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Giza pyramids are the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Up close, the scale is staggering — Khufu's pyramid alone contains over 2.3 million limestone blocks. Visit time: 1.5–2 hours.

The Great Sphinx of Giza

Carved from a single limestone outcrop around 2,500 BC, the Sphinx guards the Giza necropolis with the body of a lion and the face — most Egyptologists believe — of pharaoh Khafre. Visit time: 30–45 minutes.

Step Pyramid of Saqqara

The world's oldest stone monument, built around 2,670 BC by the architect Imhotep for pharaoh Djoser. Saqqara is the prototype that made every later pyramid possible. Visit time: 1 hour.

Memphis open-air museum

The first capital of unified Egypt, founded around 3,100 BC. Today its highlight is the colossal recumbent statue of Ramses II carved from a single block of fine limestone. Visit time: 30 minutes.

Travel tips

  • Start sightseeing before 9 am — both for cooler temperatures and the best light at Giza.
  • Carry small Egyptian pound notes for tips (baksheesh) at sites and washrooms.
  • Dress modestly when visiting mosques — knees and shoulders covered; women receive a scarf at the door.
  • Cairo traffic is intense — always allow a buffer between activities and let your guide handle timing.
  • Camera ticket is sometimes paid separately inside tombs and the museum — your guide will advise.

Good to know

  • Tour runs daily, year-round — Friday mornings are quietest at the pyramids.
  • Wheelchair access is partial at Giza (vehicle access to the plateau) and limited inside tombs.
  • Children of all ages welcome; family-friendly pacing on request.
  • Tour times can be flexed to fit your flights or cruise embarkation.

What to expect

Atmosphere

Energetic, monumental and constantly surprising — Cairo is a working megacity layered over 5,000 years of history. Expect crowds at Giza, quieter wonders inside the Grand Egyptian Museum and an authentic medieval bazaar at Khan El Khalili.

Activity level

Moderate sightseeing pace with plenty of stops, photo time and shaded breaks. Around 1–2 km of walking at the pyramids and a similar distance inside each museum.

Physical effort

Suitable for most fitness levels. Uneven ground at Giza and a few low passages if you choose to enter a pyramid (optional, paid extra).

Best time to visit

October to April is ideal — pleasant 18–28°C days, perfect for sightseeing. May to September is hot but very doable with early starts; July–August can exceed 38°C.

Photo opportunities

  • Panoramic pyramid viewpoint south of the Sphinx — the classic three-pyramid line-up.
  • Camel silhouette at golden hour on the Giza plateau.
  • Sphinx and Khafre's pyramid framed together from the lower terrace.
  • Grand atrium and staircase of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
  • Lantern-lit alleys of Khan El Khalili and the El Fishawy café.

Suitability

FamiliesExcellent — kids love the pyramids, camels and Tutankhamun's gold.
ChildrenAll ages welcome; child-friendly pacing and snacks on request.
SeniorsHighly suitable; air-conditioned vehicle door-to-door, benches at every stop.
Limited mobilityPartial. Vehicle access to the Giza plateau; tomb interiors involve steps and narrow passages.
