Почему именно этот тур

Четырнадцать дней — это редкость. Большинство путешественников видят Каир, круиз и максимум Абу-Симбел. Те, у кого есть две недели, увидят настоящий Египет: Александрию на средиземноморском побережье, Белую пустыню под звёздами и неделю на 5★ Ниле с заходом в Абу-Симбел.

The pyramids most travellers miss — older, weirder and arguably more important than Giza.

The most demanding day of the itinerary — and the most rewarding.

Early start (around 4 AM) for the 3-hour drive to Abu Simbel. The two temples Ramses II carved into a Nubian cliff, reassembled by UNESCO sixty metres higher in the 1960s when the High Dam threatened to flood them. Sunrise at Abu Simbel is one of the great moments in Egyptian travel.

Return to Aswan. Philae Temple of Isis, reached by motorboat to Agilkia Island. Disembark cruise and transfer to Aswan airport for the flight back to Cairo.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Opened in 2002 as a deliberate modern echo of the ancient Library of Alexandria — that legendary repository of half the recorded knowledge of the ancient world, founded around 285 BC under the Ptolemies and destroyed in stages over the following centuries. The modern building, designed by Snøhetta, is a disc tilted towards the Mediterranean like a rising sun. The reading room is the largest in the world. It is not a reconstruction; it is a statement that Alexandria still believes in libraries.

Qaitbay Citadel

Built in 1477 by the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay on the exact site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — using fragments of the lighthouse's collapsed stone. The Pharos stood at over 100 metres for sixteen centuries before being finally toppled by the earthquake of 1303. Marine archaeologists have been mapping the underwater fragments off the citadel's western terrace for over thirty years; on a still day you can sometimes see column drums just below the surface.

Step Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara

Built around 2670 BC by the architect Imhotep for the pharaoh Djoser, the Step Pyramid is the oldest large-scale cut-stone structure on earth. Before Imhotep, monumental architecture in Egypt was built of mud-brick. Imhotep — later deified by the Egyptians and identified by the Greeks with Asclepius — invented an entirely new way of building: durable, permanent, and meant to last. Every later pyramid, including the Great Pyramid at Giza, descends directly from this single structure. Standing in front of it is standing at the beginning of architecture itself.

Dendera Temple of Hathor

One of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and one of the very few with a complete roof still in place. Built during the Ptolemaic period over the foundations of much older shrines, Dendera was the cult centre of Hathor — goddess of love, music, joy and motherhood. The recently cleaned astronomical ceiling, with its zodiac and its depictions of the night sky, is the finest in Egypt. The rear external wall carries one of the very few surviving images of Cleopatra VII carved in Egyptian style, alongside her son Caesarion.

Abydos Temple of Seti I

Abydos was the most sacred pilgrimage site in ancient Egypt for almost three thousand years — the cult centre of Osiris, lord of the underworld. The temple Seti I built here around 1290 BC contains what most Egyptologists consider the finest temple reliefs ever carved by any civilisation. The Gallery of the Kings holds the Abydos king-list — 76 pharaohs in chronological order, the single most important historical document we have for reconstructing Egyptian dynasties. Behind the temple, the mysterious Osireion remains one of the most enigmatic structures in Egypt; its purpose is still debated.

Abu Simbel — Great Temple of Ramses II

Carved directly into a Nubian cliff in the 13th century BC by Ramses II, the temple's facade is dominated by four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh, each over 20 metres tall. Twice a year — on 22 February and 22 October — the rising sun penetrates 60 metres into the temple to illuminate the inner sanctuary, leaving the statue of Ptah (the god of darkness) deliberately in shadow. When the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s threatened to flood the entire site, UNESCO coordinated the largest archaeological rescue ever undertaken: both temples were cut into 1,036 blocks, each weighing up to 30 tons, and reassembled on an artificial mountain sixty metres higher. The alignment with the rising sun was preserved with a margin of error of approximately one day.

The White Desert

A national park in the heart of Egypt's Western Desert where wind erosion has carved the chalk landscape into white sculptural formations that look closer to ice fields than to desert. Mushrooms, monoliths, fingers of stone. The light here at sunrise and sunset is unlike anything else in Egypt; at night the sky is so dark and so clear that the Milky Way casts shadows. The geological formations are made of chalk laid down at the bottom of a Cretaceous sea around 80 million years ago, slowly uncovered as the desert wind blew the softer sandstone away. The park has been protected since 2002.

October to April is the only window I recommend for this itinerary. The cruise temperatures are perfect (22–28 °C), the White Desert is genuinely magical (28 °C by day, 4–10 °C at night, with the best winter star skies), and Cairo and Alexandria are at their easiest. The Western Desert is officially closed to overnight tourism between June and August because of the heat. The single most beautiful month for the full itinerary is November — light, temperature and humidity are all close to ideal.

Visa

30-day tourist visa on arrival for 25 USD cash, or e-visa online. All major European nationalities including Bulgarian, German, French, Italian, UK.

Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.

Health

No mandatory vaccinations. Hepatitis A and tetanus boosters recommended by family doctor. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for the desert overnight.

Currency

Egyptian pound (EGP). Euros and US dollars accepted in hotels and shops. ATMs in all cities. Small denominations needed for tipping (cruise crew, Bedouin team, drivers).

What to pack

Layers, layers, layers — Cairo and Alexandria can be cool in winter, the desert night can drop below 5 °C, and the Red Sea wants swimwear. Closed shoes for temples and the plateau. One warm fleece for the desert. A scarf for mosques. A light long-sleeved shirt for the cruise sun deck. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a refillable water bottle.

Internet & SIM

Buy a tourist SIM (Vodafone or Orange) at Cairo airport on arrival. 4G coverage is good on the cruise and in Hurghada; intermittent in the Western Desert.

Tipping

Guideline for 14 days: 10 EUR per day for the main guide, 5 EUR per day for the driver, around 40 EUR per couple for the cruise crew tip pool collected at the end, and 20 EUR per couple for the Bedouin team.

Power

European two-pin plugs throughout (220V). Bring an adapter if travelling from the UK.
