Why choose this tour

Most of my guests come to Egypt for a week. The ones who come for two weeks leave changed. Fourteen days is the threshold where Egypt stops being a holiday and becomes a journey — long enough to see Alexandria as well as Cairo, long enough for a full week on the Nile rather than a four-day taster, long enough to sleep in the White Desert under stars so close they feel pinned to your tent, and still long enough at the end to do nothing on the Red Sea for three days. I have guided this itinerary, in one form or another, for almost thirty years. It remains the route I would design for my closest friend visiting Egypt for the first time.

We start on the Mediterranean — Alexandria, the city of Cleopatra, the lost lighthouse, the great library. Then Cairo, properly, over three days rather than two: pyramids, Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara, Memphis, and an evening in old Islamic Cairo. A flight south to Luxor and a full seven nights on a deluxe Nile cruiser — slow enough to read on the sun deck, deep enough to visit Dendera and Abydos, two temples most cruises miss. We continue overland to Abu Simbel and Aswan, then fly to the Western Desert for two nights in Bahariya and a single magical night sleeping among the chalk formations of the White Desert. We finish on the Red Sea, where after thirteen extraordinary days you have nothing left to do but float.

This is the itinerary for travellers who refuse to rush Egypt. Couples on a long honeymoon. Photographers. Cultural travellers in early retirement. Anyone who has read about this country for years and finally has the time to see it properly. We pace it for energy, not endurance — every long day is followed by a slower one, every flight is short, every transfer is private, and every night you sleep somewhere genuinely worth the journey.

Complete day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Cairo · Transfer to Alexandria

Met at Cairo International Airport by an EGT Luxury Travel representative with a name board. Visa-on-arrival handled, then private transfer 2.5 hours along the desert highway to Alexandria.

Afternoon

Check-in at your 5★ Alexandria hotel — Steigenberger Cecil on the Corniche, the original 1929 art-deco landmark, or Four Seasons San Stefano further east. Rest of the afternoon free.

Evening

Walk along the Corniche as the lights come on. Optional welcome dinner at a Mediterranean seafood restaurant.

Meals

No meals included on arrival day.

Accommodation

Steigenberger Cecil or Four Seasons San Stefano.

Transport

Private A/C vehicle from CAI airport.

Guide tip

Alexandria is genuinely different from Cairo — Mediterranean, cooler, with a softer light. Sleep early; tomorrow rewards an unhurried start.

Day 2

Alexandria · Catacombs · Qaitbay · Bibliotheca

A full day with your Alexandrian guide.

Morning

Kom el-Shoqafa, the largest Roman catacomb complex in Egypt — three underground levels carved into solid rock around the 2nd century AD, where Egyptian, Greek and Roman funerary art meet in a way that exists nowhere else. Pompey's Pillar, the surviving 27-metre column of red Aswan granite.

Afternoon

Lunch at a Mediterranean fish restaurant on the Corniche. Qaitbay Citadel — built in 1477 on the exact foundations of the ancient Pharos lighthouse, using fragments of the original stone. Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern echo of the legendary ancient library.

Evening

Return to the hotel. Dinner at a local seafood grill.

Meals

Breakfast at the hotel · lunch included.

Accommodation

Same Alexandria hotel.

Transport

Private A/C vehicle and Egyptologist guide.

Guide tip

Stand on the western terrace of Qaitbay and look at the sea — somewhere under the water in front of you, the lighthouse fragments still lie. Marine archaeologists have been mapping them for thirty years.

Day 3

Alexandria · Return to Cairo

Late morning checkout and private transfer back to Cairo (around 2.5 hours).

Afternoon

Check-in at your 5★ Cairo hotel — Marriott Mena House under the pyramids, or a central Nile-side property.

Evening

Rest evening. Optional dinner with pyramid view from the Mena House gardens.

Meals

Breakfast at the Alexandria hotel.

Accommodation

Marriott Mena House or equivalent.

Transport

Private A/C vehicle Alexandria–Cairo.

Guide tip

Take it easy this evening. Tomorrow is one of the heaviest sightseeing days of the trip.

Day 4

Pyramids of Giza · Sphinx · Grand Egyptian Museum

Your senior Cairo Egyptologist collects you after breakfast and drives to the Giza plateau.

Morning

The Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the panoramic viewpoint. Time inside the pyramid if you wish. Optional camel ride along the desert edge.

Afternoon

Lunch at a restaurant overlooking the plateau, then the Grand Egyptian Museum: the full Tutankhamun treasure, the Grand Staircase, the panoramic window framing the pyramids themselves. Allow 2.5–3 hours.

Evening

Return to the hotel. Optional Sound and Light show.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch included.

Accommodation

Same Cairo hotel.

Transport

Private vehicle and Egyptologist.

Guide tip

Closed shoes. Buy the 6 EUR photo permit at the GEM entrance.

Day 5

Saqqara · Memphis · Dahshur

The pyramids most travellers miss — older, weirder and arguably more important than Giza.

Morning

Saqqara, the necropolis of ancient Memphis. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2670 BC by the architect Imhotep, is the oldest large-scale cut-stone structure on earth — the moment in human history when architecture became permanent. The Pyramid of Unas, with the oldest religious text ever recorded carved on its inner walls. The beautifully painted mastaba tombs of nobles.

Afternoon

The open-air museum of Memphis — the colossal recumbent statue of Ramses II and the alabaster sphinx. Then Dahshur: the Red Pyramid, the first true smooth-sided pyramid in history, and the Bent Pyramid, where Egyptian engineers learned the geometry of the pyramid form by changing the angle mid-construction.

Evening

Return to the hotel. Free evening.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch included.

Accommodation

Same Cairo hotel.

Transport

Private vehicle and Egyptologist.

Guide tip

Dahshur is almost always empty. You can walk up to the Red Pyramid and have its base entirely to yourself — a privilege Giza does not give.

Day 6

Old Islamic & Coptic Cairo · Fly to Luxor · Embark cruise

A morning in medieval Cairo, then a short flight south.

Morning

The Citadel of Saladin and the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Khan El Khalili bazaar. The hanging Coptic church of St. Sergius and the synagogue of Ben Ezra in Old Cairo.

Afternoon

Transfer to Cairo airport for the one-hour domestic flight to Luxor. Met at Luxor airport and transferred to your 5★ deluxe Nile cruiser.

Evening

Welcome cocktail and dinner on board.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch in Cairo · dinner on board.

Accommodation

Oberoi Philae, Sonesta St. George, Movenpick Sun Ray or equivalent 5★ deluxe cruiser.

Transport

Private vehicle in Cairo · domestic flight CAI–LXR · transfer to cruise.

Guide tip

Pack a light scarf for women entering the Alabaster Mosque, and slip-on shoes — you remove them at the mosque entrance.

Day 7

Karnak · Luxor Temple · Sail to Dendera

Two of the greatest temple complexes in Egypt, then a quiet evening sailing north — the direction most cruises do not go.

Morning

Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built. The Hypostyle Hall, the sacred lake, the surviving obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose I. Your guide takes you well beyond the standard route.

Afternoon

Luxor Temple in late afternoon light. Back on board for sailing north towards Dendera — a part of the Nile most cruises never visit.

Evening

Dinner on board, sun deck for the slow river sunset.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch and dinner on board.

Accommodation

5★ deluxe cruiser.

Transport

Private vehicle in Luxor · cruise sailing.

Guide tip

If you take only one cruise photograph from the sun deck, take it tonight as we sail north past the farmland between Luxor and Qena.

Day 8

Dendera Temple · Sail south

Dendera is the temple most travellers in Egypt never reach. Today you have the privilege.

Morning

The Temple of Hathor at Dendera — one of the best-preserved Ptolemaic temples in Egypt, with a complete roof, intact astronomical ceiling, and the famous Dendera zodiac. The Greco-Roman portraits of Cleopatra VII and Caesarion on the rear wall are the only major surviving images of the queen carved in Egyptian style.

Afternoon

Back on board and sailing south. Lunch on board.

Evening

Dinner on board. Optional galabeya (traditional dress) party.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch and dinner on board.

Accommodation

5★ deluxe cruiser.

Transport

Cruise sailing.

Guide tip

Look up at the ceiling inside the temple — the recently restored astronomical decoration is one of the most extraordinary in Egypt and is best seen in the slanted morning light.

Day 9

Abydos Temple · Sail to Esna

The second temple most cruises miss, and arguably the spiritual heart of ancient Egypt.

Morning

Abydos — the temple of Seti I, considered by many Egyptologists to contain the finest temple reliefs ever carved. The famous Abydos king-list, which records 76 pharaohs in chronological order, is here. Abydos was also the cult centre of Osiris and one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in the ancient world for almost three thousand years.

Afternoon

Back on board, sailing south. Lunch on board, afternoon on the sun deck.

Evening

Dinner and crossing the Esna lock — a quiet, cinematic moment on every Nile cruise.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch and dinner on board.

Accommodation

5★ deluxe cruiser.

Transport

Private vehicle to Abydos · cruise sailing south.

Guide tip

Touch the wall of the king-list gallery very gently. The carving is so fine that even after 3,300 years the surface is glass-smooth.

Day 10

Valley of the Kings · Hatshepsut · Colossi of Memnon

The West Bank of Luxor, this morning paced specifically because you already know the temples from days 7–9.

Morning

Valley of the Kings — three tombs from the standard ticket selection, plus optional tickets for the tomb of Tutankhamun and the breathtaking tomb of Seti I (KV17) if open. Temple of Hatshepsut. Colossi of Memnon.

Afternoon

Optional sunset hot-air balloon ride briefing (for tomorrow morning). Lunch on board, afternoon on the sun deck.

Evening

Dinner on board. Sailing south to Edfu.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch and dinner on board.

Accommodation

5★ deluxe cruiser.

Transport

Private vehicle on West Bank · cruise sailing.

Guide tip

The tomb of Seti I is the artistic standard against which every other tomb in Egypt is measured. If it is open during your visit, prioritise it above all others.

Day 11

Edfu · Kom Ombo · Sail to Aswan

Two beautifully preserved Ptolemaic temples and the most cinematic day of the cruise.

Morning

Edfu Temple of Horus, the most completely preserved temple in Egypt. Arrival by horse carriage from the dock.

Afternoon

Back on board. Around 4 PM, Kom Ombo — the only Egyptian temple dedicated to two gods at once, Sobek and Horus the Elder, and the small Crocodile Museum.

Evening

Sailing into Aswan at sunset.

Meals

Breakfast · lunch and dinner on board.

Accommodation

5★ deluxe cruiser docked in Aswan.

Transport

Cruise sailing · horse carriage to Edfu.

Guide tip

The Esna lock crossing earlier in the cruise is a sleepy memory. Tonight's sunset over the granite islands of Aswan is the one travellers photograph and frame.

Day 12

Abu Simbel · Philae · Disembark · Fly to Cairo · Fly to Bahariya gateway

The most demanding day of the itinerary — and the most rewarding.

Morning

Early start (around 4 AM) for the 3-hour drive to Abu Simbel. The two temples Ramses II carved into a Nubian cliff, reassembled by UNESCO sixty metres higher in the 1960s when the High Dam threatened to flood them. Sunrise at Abu Simbel is one of the great moments in Egyptian travel.

Afternoon

Return to Aswan. Philae Temple of Isis, reached by motorboat to Agilkia Island. Disembark cruise and transfer to Aswan airport for the flight back to Cairo.

Evening

Late-night arrival in Cairo. Overnight in a comfortable airport hotel. Early next morning we drive west to Bahariya. (For travellers who prefer a calmer day, we can replace the desert extension with two additional Red Sea nights — tell us at booking.)

Meals

Breakfast and lunch on board · dinner at airport hotel.

Accommodation

Le Meridien Cairo Airport or equivalent.

Transport

Private vehicle to Abu Simbel · motorboat to Philae · flight ASW–CAI.

Guide tip

Yes, today is long. In thirty years of guiding, no traveller has ever told me they regret the day they stood at Abu Simbel at sunrise.

Day 13

White Desert overnight expedition

A 4×4 expedition into the Western Desert — one of the strangest and most beautiful landscapes on earth.

Morning

Private transfer (around 4 hours) from Cairo to the oasis town of Bahariya. Lunch on arrival. Visit the Golden Mummies museum, the Temple of Alexander the Great, and the hot springs.

Afternoon

Continue by 4×4 into the Black Desert — basalt-capped hills rising out of the sand — and the Crystal Mountain, a small ridge of natural quartz. Arrival at the White Desert before sunset.

Evening

Bedouin camp set up under the chalk formations. Dinner cooked over the fire — grilled chicken or lamb, fresh bread, salads, tea. The sky here is the best you will ever see on earth. Sleep in a private bedouin tent with proper bedding.

Meals

Breakfast at Cairo hotel · lunch in Bahariya · dinner in the desert.

Accommodation

Private Bedouin tent, White Desert camp.

Transport

Private vehicle Cairo–Bahariya · 4×4 expedition.

Guide tip

Pack one warm fleece — desert nights in winter can drop close to zero. The temperature contrast between mid-afternoon (25 °C) and 3 AM (4 °C) is the largest you will experience anywhere in Egypt.

Day 14

Sunrise in the White Desert · Drive to Hurghada · Red Sea

The single most photographed sunrise in the Egyptian desert — and then a long, dramatic drive to the Red Sea.

Morning

Sunrise over the chalk formations. Breakfast in the camp. Drive back to Bahariya, then continue across the Eastern Desert towards Hurghada (around 6 hours total, with stops). Some travellers prefer to return to Cairo and fly to Hurghada — both options are included; tell us your preference.

Afternoon

Arrival at your 5★ Red Sea resort. Check-in. The afternoon belongs to the beach.

Evening

All-inclusive dinner. Walk along the beach as the lights come on.

Meals

Breakfast in the desert · all-inclusive lunch and dinner at the resort.

Accommodation

Steigenberger Al Dau Beach, Movenpick Soma Bay or equivalent 5★ Red Sea resort.

Transport

4×4 from the desert · private vehicle to Hurghada.

Guide tip

After thirteen days of relentless wonder, the Red Sea is the country's gentlest reward. Do nothing for the next three days. Doing nothing well is part of how you process Egypt.

Day 15

Red Sea · Departure

A final morning at the resort, then a private transfer to Hurghada International Airport for your homeward flight. (For travellers who chose to extend, we add 2–4 additional nights here at no extra trouble.)

Afternoon

Private transfer to HRG airport.

Evening

Departure.

Meals

Breakfast at the resort.

Transport

Private transfer to HRG airport.

Guide tip

Hurghada airport is small and efficient. Allow 2.5 hours before international departures.

05

Attractions you will visit

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Opened in 2002 as a deliberate modern echo of the ancient Library of Alexandria — that legendary repository of half the recorded knowledge of the ancient world, founded around 285 BC under the Ptolemies and destroyed in stages over the following centuries. The modern building, designed by Snøhetta, is a disc tilted towards the Mediterranean like a rising sun. The reading room is the largest in the world. It is not a reconstruction; it is a statement that Alexandria still believes in libraries.

Qaitbay Citadel

Built in 1477 by the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay on the exact site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — using fragments of the lighthouse's collapsed stone. The Pharos stood at over 100 metres for sixteen centuries before being finally toppled by the earthquake of 1303. Marine archaeologists have been mapping the underwater fragments off the citadel's western terrace for over thirty years; on a still day you can sometimes see column drums just below the surface.

Step Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara

Built around 2670 BC by the architect Imhotep for the pharaoh Djoser, the Step Pyramid is the oldest large-scale cut-stone structure on earth. Before Imhotep, monumental architecture in Egypt was built of mud-brick. Imhotep — later deified by the Egyptians and identified by the Greeks with Asclepius — invented an entirely new way of building: durable, permanent, and meant to last. Every later pyramid, including the Great Pyramid at Giza, descends directly from this single structure. Standing in front of it is standing at the beginning of architecture itself.

Dendera Temple of Hathor

One of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and one of the very few with a complete roof still in place. Built during the Ptolemaic period over the foundations of much older shrines, Dendera was the cult centre of Hathor — goddess of love, music, joy and motherhood. The recently cleaned astronomical ceiling, with its zodiac and its depictions of the night sky, is the finest in Egypt. The rear external wall carries one of the very few surviving images of Cleopatra VII carved in Egyptian style, alongside her son Caesarion.

Abydos Temple of Seti I

Abydos was the most sacred pilgrimage site in ancient Egypt for almost three thousand years — the cult centre of Osiris, lord of the underworld. The temple Seti I built here around 1290 BC contains what most Egyptologists consider the finest temple reliefs ever carved by any civilisation. The Gallery of the Kings holds the Abydos king-list — 76 pharaohs in chronological order, the single most important historical document we have for reconstructing Egyptian dynasties. Behind the temple, the mysterious Osireion remains one of the most enigmatic structures in Egypt; its purpose is still debated.

Abu Simbel — Great Temple of Ramses II

Carved directly into a Nubian cliff in the 13th century BC by Ramses II, the temple's facade is dominated by four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh, each over 20 metres tall. Twice a year — on 22 February and 22 October — the rising sun penetrates 60 metres into the temple to illuminate the inner sanctuary, leaving the statue of Ptah (the god of darkness) deliberately in shadow. When the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s threatened to flood the entire site, UNESCO coordinated the largest archaeological rescue ever undertaken: both temples were cut into 1,036 blocks, each weighing up to 30 tons, and reassembled on an artificial mountain sixty metres higher. The alignment with the rising sun was preserved with a margin of error of approximately one day.

The White Desert

A national park in the heart of Egypt's Western Desert where wind erosion has carved the chalk landscape into white sculptural formations that look closer to ice fields than to desert. Mushrooms, monoliths, fingers of stone. The light here at sunrise and sunset is unlike anything else in Egypt; at night the sky is so dark and so clear that the Milky Way casts shadows. The geological formations are made of chalk laid down at the bottom of a Cretaceous sea around 80 million years ago, slowly uncovered as the desert wind blew the softer sandstone away. The park has been protected since 2002.

09

Optional experiences

Hot-air balloon over Luxor at sunrise

45 minutes drifting over the West Bank — the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, all from the air. One of the great photographic experiences in Egypt.

Abu Simbel sound and light show

Evening lighting and narration at the temples, on those nights of the year it is scheduled.

Nile dinner cruise in Cairo

Two hours on the river on a Cairo evening, with Tanoura dance and traditional music.

Saqqara Serapeum and Old Kingdom tombs

An extended Saqqara morning with the Serapeum — the underground galleries where the sacred Apis bulls were buried in granite sarcophagi each weighing 70 tons.

Add 2–4 Red Sea nights

Extend the Hurghada stay at the end, or move to Marsa Alam for quieter, southern reefs.

10

Best time to visit

October to April is the only window I recommend for this itinerary. The cruise temperatures are perfect (22–28 °C), the White Desert is genuinely magical (28 °C by day, 4–10 °C at night, with the best winter star skies), and Cairo and Alexandria are at their easiest. The Western Desert is officially closed to overnight tourism between June and August because of the heat. The single most beautiful month for the full itinerary is November — light, temperature and humidity are all close to ideal.

11

Before you travel

Visa

30-day tourist visa on arrival for 25 USD cash, or e-visa online. All major European nationalities including Bulgarian, German, French, Italian, UK.

Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.

Health

No mandatory vaccinations. Hepatitis A and tetanus boosters recommended by family doctor. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for the desert overnight.

Currency

Egyptian pound (EGP). Euros and US dollars accepted in hotels and shops. ATMs in all cities. Small denominations needed for tipping (cruise crew, Bedouin team, drivers).

What to pack

Layers, layers, layers — Cairo and Alexandria can be cool in winter, the desert night can drop below 5 °C, and the Red Sea wants swimwear. Closed shoes for temples and the plateau. One warm fleece for the desert. A scarf for mosques. A light long-sleeved shirt for the cruise sun deck. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a refillable water bottle.

Internet & SIM

Buy a tourist SIM (Vodafone or Orange) at Cairo airport on arrival. 4G coverage is good on the cruise and in Hurghada; intermittent in the Western Desert.

Tipping

Guideline for 14 days: 10 EUR per day for the main guide, 5 EUR per day for the driver, around 40 EUR per couple for the cruise crew tip pool collected at the end, and 20 EUR per couple for the Bedouin team.

Power

European two-pin plugs throughout (220V). Bring an adapter if travelling from the UK.
