What's open right now
The Grand Hall with Ramses II's 3,200-year-old colossus, the ceremonial staircase with dozens of monumental statues climbing towards the pyramid-view window, the main chronological galleries (Predynastic through Roman Egypt), the two Tutankhamun galleries with over 5,000 objects — including the famous golden mask, the chariots and the nested shrines — and the reconstructed Khufu solar boat. That is 90% of what most travellers want to see.
What's still opening
A handful of thematic galleries (specialist collections on daily life, women, kingship, and select conservation labs) are rolling out through 2026. None of these missing rooms will spoil a first visit. Restaurants, gift shops, the children's museum and the conference centre are already operating.
How long you need
Minimum two hours if you focus on Tutankhamun and the staircase. Three to four hours to walk the full chronological sequence at a decent pace. I recommend budgeting three hours plus a break for coffee — the mezzanine café has the best pyramid view of any restaurant in Cairo.
Tickets and best time to arrive
Foreign adult tickets are approximately €25 for general admission, plus an add-on for the Tutankhamun galleries (roughly €30 extra) and another supplement for the Khufu boat wing. Buy online in advance if you can, otherwise a licensed guide will handle it. Best arrival slot: 09:00. Second best: 15:00 — light through the pyramid-window is spectacular in late afternoon.
How the GEM compares to the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir
The GEM is bigger, better lit, better labelled and better organised. The Tahrir museum is still open and still worth visiting — it has the Royal Mummies Hall (an incredible, respectful room housing pharaohs including Ramses II and Hatshepsut), and its dusty 1902 charm is unrepeatable. My recommendation: GEM on day one, Tahrir on a later day if you have time.
Combining the GEM with the Pyramids
The GEM is directly adjacent to the Giza plateau, so it makes complete sense to do Pyramids at opening (7am) and the museum straight after (10am–13:00), followed by lunch on the plateau side. This is the itinerary I run for 90% of my one-day-in-Cairo guests.
Practical notes
Photography is allowed in most galleries; flash is not. Water bottles allowed. Backpacks larger than a small daypack must be checked at the entrance. Wheelchair access is excellent — lifts everywhere. Allow 20 minutes for the security queue at busy periods; less first thing in the morning.
